Interview - Pissing Match

1.Loud greetings of Perú,Aaron! How going the things in Pissing Match?
¡Salud! Las cosas son muy excellente. After taking things slowly in most of 2018, we're starting to play more and get word out about recent recordings we would like to release. We are looking forward to 2019.

2.Tell us how is form this destructive band of raw hardcore thrash called Pissing Match? Hows been the begings?
The band started as a solo project in 2013. I was initially inspired by the Swedish hardcore punk band, Pusrad, who play short, fast songs with rapid time changes. I was also influenced by US/CAN hardcore punk such as DRI, Hated Youth, Koro, Neos, YDI, and lastly, but most personably, the Puerto Rican hardcore punk band, Tropiezo, who take a similar attitude to playing fast, tight, songs with a lot of energy.

I recorded all of the parts on the 10 song demo myself, then our vocalist Jay heard it on the local punk message board and expressed interest in it, so I contacted him about joining. We then recruited Joe on bass and Rob on drums and started playing our first shows in 2014.

3.Discography of Pissing Match?

Demo (More Power Tapes, 2014)

Break the Seal 7" (Pissing Match/Feral Kid Records/Dissonant Society, 2016)

Crossing Streams 7" (Unreleased, forthcoming)

Split 7" (Unreleased, forthcoming)

4.Influences at Pissing Match?
Specifically, DRI, Hated Youth, Koro, Neos, Pusrad, and Tropiezo. We all listen to a lot of different music outside of punk as well. I take some influence in my chord changes from jazz-bebop also.

5.Some members of Pissing Match have another proyect paralell?
Yes. I play guitar in a grindcore band with my wife, Jessika, and our friend, Jim, called RABID PEAK. Jay, Eric, and Rob are in a lucha libre themed hardcore punk band called PURE HEEL. Rob is also in a post-hardcore band called WORSE THINGS. Joe is in a synthesizer driven instrumental pop-rock band called GOOD DUDE.

6.Aaron explain some more about the actual hardcore thrash from your city and recommend some bands.
Buffalo has a history of great hardcore and punk bands going back to the early to mid 1980's. Tension, Manic Depression, the Goo Goo Dolls, Zero Tolerance, and Snapcase are all noteworthy. Jay used to play in a band with his brother, Scott, called Slugfest who were a big influence on me growing up. I annoy Jay at band practice when I start playing Slugfest riffs.

Recently, there are quite a few really good active bands from Buffalo, NY. Healer, Clear Focus, Wreckage, Anthropic, Prepare for the Mindscan, Black X, Old Ghosts, Modern Problems, Facility Men, Juggernaut, GOA, The Drains, Selective Aggression, Barbaryan, and Radiation Risks are just to name a few.

7.Pissing Match knows the hardcore thrash scene of Southamerica?
I'm a big fan of the obvious Brazilian stuff like Ratos de Porão, Abuso Sonoro, and Besthöven. We recently played with O Inimigo, from Brazil, who were awesome. I'm also familiar with Massacre Palestina from Argentina.

I know that D-beat is very popular in South America, similar to how popular it was in the early Scandinavian scene. Fifteen years ago, Mike Woodford, from the Canadian band, Ox Baker, made me a great compilation of South American stuff from his own collection, but unfortunately, it has since been lost.

After the interview, you should hook me up with some info on current bands, so I can check out some new stuff.

8.Stuff avaliable of Pissing Match at the moment? where the punxs can find the stuff?
You can order recordings and shirts from us at our Bandcamp page:

9.Morbid future plans?
We're going to keep releasing material and playing shows. Maybe in the next few years, we'll be able to take a couple of weeks and tour the southern hemisphere and hang out with all of you punkeros bonitos de Perú. I'll brush up on mi español jodido before then!

10.Last words Aaron and thanks for your time in this interview.
